What's the next challenge?

Postby TheIceMage » Wed Mar 18, 2009 8:13 pm

The One Million Gold challenge is well underway, but we all knew it would be a long-term mission. What should the next challenge be? We've done several different things already. What would you like to see?

I'm thinking a knock-out fest. No armor allowed, weapons are fine. If a player gets killed, you have to sell them, and you can't buy a dead orc. Tolerance would be on the honor system, but it should be some set number.

What's your idea?

Don't want no short orc.

The only problem with your challenge idea is that the Homelands would then be flooded with dead, potentially useful orcs.

Here's my take: Toughness-1 orcs get and deserve no love. Sure, they're a good deal cheaper than a Toughness-3 orc with the same stats and experience, but Overlords will almost always pay for the higher toughness because the orc will last longer on the field, will die less often, and can be upgraded to Toughness 4 if an Overlord decides that he wants to leave the orc in jail for a loooong time repeatedly. What does a Toughness-1 orc have to look forward to? Maybe, someday, Toughness 2... and that's it. He needs at least one plate section of armour and the rest chain to make any impact in a game. (In fact, I think that Toughness-1 and -2 orcs should be called goblins, and be much, much faster than tougher orcs.) Rant ends here.

So, for your knock-out fest, you should have a Homelands that consists entirely of Toughness-1 orcs. It'll make them feel useful, you'll get plenty of knock-outs, and if they get killed and sold, no one will really care.

All toughness-1 would certainly increase the body count. But there is something to be said for finally taking out your opponent's toughest orc.

And yeah, getting around to a pretty useless Homelands is kindof part of the appeal to me. Overlords have to scout more frequently.

Autopilots wouldn't play by the rules, so it would have to be a 100% human league.

Don't you want me, baby? Don't you want me? Oh!

Alright, I'd like to start this challenge. As an all-human league, I need 7 or 8 volunteers (I'd love to play). Here's the rules:

This is a DIVISION ONE league. Not Elite. Not Novice. You have to risk an existing team. HOWEVER, I would be open to the possibility of recording which orcs are on the team at the start of the season and restoring those orcs to the team at the end. Those involved in the league will decide this.

The prize: Gold medal team gets to pick an orc from each of three opponents in the league (or from the homelands, if you want to be nice) to add to their team. Silver medal picks two. Bronze medal picks one. No team can lose more than two orcs in this award. Orcs picked by other winning teams are not eligible for later selection, and there is no other immunity. If participants decide to restore team composition at the end of the season, picks happen after the restore. Pick order is Gold, Silver, Bronze, Gold, Silver, Gold.

If I don't get 7 or 8 contestants, I reserve the right to call you all wusses. If I get 15 or 16 contestants, the next round's on me. And I'm not talking the Cherry stuff, either!

I'm in, but I'm not sure I understand the challenge. Are we supposed to enter a team, or are we supposed to send orcs TO a team?

Let me know the name of your Division I-qualifying team. When the time comes, I will handle activation. Then the league starts and everyone strips their armor off!

You're all wusses. Except for CrunchTroll. And me.

Either A) this challenge was not compelling and you want me to come up with something different or B) you didn't want to risk a Div I team and you want me to come up with something different.

Well, true enough.

I could open it up to *any* (non-novice) team. Open house. Would that make a difference?

Or could maybe make it Div I and Elite only. That way we wouldnt have Div II and III teams getting pounded into the ground. Oh wait scratch that. That would make it even better
