Status of the Move

Postby TheIceMage » Mon Nov 16, 2009 2:53 pm

Why do things have to be so complicated?

I interviewed several web hosts and settled on one that told me they can handle all my requirements. I opened my account, moved my files and tried to get things up and running.

When it came down to it, though, Green Geeks said, "yes, we can do that" when they really meant, "No, we can't do that." I'm specifically talking about Java servlets, which OrcSports uses for the game's playback mechanism. There's something about actually reading a question that helps you to answer it. When someone says, "Java servlet" (which is a server thing), they don't mean "Javascript" (which is a browser thing). Duh.

Long story short, I am going to have to rewrite part of the playback to get it working from this web host. It's not a huge difference, though I'm somewhat nervous since I haven't changed playback code in a long time and Java's gone through quite a few changes in the meantime. And they did offer me a $25 credit on my account. Swell.

On the bright side, the new host seems to be much faster than the *ahem* old *cough* host.

Like I said on my announcement (which you might have seen if you logged in), I'd like to get the game going again, turning on the server processes as of Friday and starting games again next week.

Are you still out there?

Just fribblin' with my cheese in my hiding place.

It's been very dark out here, and those shuffling noises were getting uncomfortably close. We're glad that the lights are back on, but now we can see what was making the shuffling: check out the recent additions to the Memberlist.

I hope that you get the playback working; it was my favourite part of the Orcsports experience! During the break, though, I started a little project that's occupying most of my time... so I won't be back immediately.

Hurry back!

I made a quick change to my installation of PHPBB that I hope will cut down on the automated account creation from spammers without overly annoying legitimate users. Let's see if it works.

I just got done deleting a couple hundred spam-looking users from the forum user list. Hopefully I didn't accidentally delete someone real. Let's see if it lasts.

A day later and so far, so good. I haven't seen any new accounts opened, when usually I would have by now. I was able to create a test account myself, so it does still work. Yay!

I decided to work on the server processes today (Saturday) rather than yesterday so that interest would not accrue on open loans. I'm glad I did because I needed the extra time. The new server's database is case sensitive and the code I wrote is, well, not. I have quite a few minor changes to make to get rid of these errors I'm seeing. I went through the same problem with the front end, too.

I guess while I'm here, I'll give a quick update.

There was a bug with the simulation that caused games to not run. There is still some problem with the emailer that prevents it from sending email. I think nothing short of a rewrite will cure it's ills, though.

Next, in this whole move process, I got rid of my Qwest account a little more suddenly than I would have liked, meaning I had to set up a new email account for the game. If you white-list, please add game@orcsports.com to it so you get emails from the game. In the meantime, I need to find where I have the old qwest.net address posted and change it.

So, games ran. That's good. The results look normal as far as I can tell. That's the good news.

The bad news is aplenty.
:( The emailer still doesn't work, so it's possible your team had a game and you didn't realize it. I probably have to rewrite it.
:( The playback still needs to be rewritten.
:( The hosting account was suspended yesterday some time between 9 AM and 11 AM. I'm not sure why yet, but we'll see. It was restored at around 8 AM today after I asked about it, so it's like a full day didn't happen (though training happened twice).
:( The message board page that allows you to read what people write ended up being 0k twice this month. I've opened a ticket with the ISP on that one.

The ISP's answer: "Wow, dude, that's not us. Maybe you're being hacked."

Great...Thanks for the help, guys.

My response: upgrade to the latest version of phpBB. I hope it worked. Let me know what you think.

Edited to add: Actually, there was one hiccup. It corrupted the passwords from the old database, so you might have to reset yours before you can log in.

Dude, where's my server?

Postby Dizzy » Tue Dec 08, 2009 9:01 pm

Always reassuring to see professionals at work. ( )

...so, the other Overlords have been awfully quiet of late. Maybe they're sitting back, not sure what to make of all of these goings-on...

I'm not sure what to make of it. I hope I haven't scared everyone away in my attempts to make things more stable. (Part of my motivation for moving the site is the fact that the machine it was running on was starting to make funny noises.)

I'm thinking maybe a hand-written email (since the emailer isn't working) might help to bring folks back now that things are working again. On the other hand, I could just work on the emailer.

Oh, so one more event happened. The account was suspended a second time because of some spammer exploiting a hole in the message board. The exploit happened on the 6th, and the account was suspended this morning. When I told them that I upgraded my message board, they unsuspended me again. Fortunately, nothing got skipped with regard to server processes this time (unlike last time when I was down for a day).

It's been a couple days - a whole weekend, in fact - and the site is still up. Hopefully the suspensions have been suspended permanently. The web host hasn't responded to my last email, but this isn't really new for them. They've been non-responsive several times throughout the transition.

Now that things appear to be stable, I can start to address the issues: Emailer, Playback, Teams getting stuck in "rollover" mode when they finish rollover.

After that, maybe I can finish the whole "gathering/occupation" thing you might have noticed on the view an orc page. At least the "versus" page (from the Schedule) works.

In looking at the thread so far, I noticed I forgot to mention the site got suspended a third time last week, for the same exploit as the second suspension. I just happened to miss a new folder created by the hacker with phishing stuff in it, and it got reported. On the bright side, the ISP actually emailed me to let me know it got suspended. Unfortunately, the email went to the wrong address and went into the spam folder on that address, so I didn't see it until after I discovered on my own that the site was down. Over the weekend, I found one more copy of the phishing content and deleted it before it got reported and got me suspended again.
