2012

Postby TheIceMage » Tue Jan 03, 2012 1:17 pm

Over vacation I worked pretty heavily on translating the simulation from VB6 to C#. It is close to being ready for some local testing. Only a few pieces are missing. In the process I may have found the elusive "home field advantage" bug, but can't be sure. The good part of this is getting familiar with some pretty old code and seeing where I need to make changes for some new features I've really been wanting, and I hope you like as well when I get to them. But the focus right now is 100% on just getting back to stable, where everything was before the server problems began last July.

So for now:
::beer:: Simulation translation is complete
 Test the simulation. A lot.
 Translate the auction process (and test)
 Finish translating the autopilot talent scout routine (and test)
 Double-check that all the pieces are ready to go
 Turn everything back on

I will be sending out an email when things are ready to get rolling again. At this time I'm projecting February 1. I will post my progress at http://www.orcsports.com/maintenance.html (which is linked from the main page at http://www.orcsports.com ). For those of you still with me, thank you for your patience. :)

Edited on 1/7/2012 to mark simulation translation complete

The first pass at translating the simulation is complete. Sim testing begins now.

Initial tests have pointed out a few things that I need to fix in my translation from VB - things that work in one language but not the other. This is probably going to take a day or two to straighten out. I'm also finding a few places where I am missing information that I need to be able to process a scheduled game. I'm filling in the holes as I go, but it is a little tedious. These are relatively minor things, though there is so much more to test.

He shoots... HE ... errors.

The translation mistakes I talked about in my Sunday update have been corrected, and I got to the point where the first shot is being taken in game before the first error came up. I fixed it, but now have to restart testing, possibly late Friday. The good news is that many of the things I have tested so far have worked as expected, with only a couple bugs found. Nothing major has come up. Let's hope it keeps going smoothly!

Initial testing on the translated simulation looks good. I fixed a handful of errors and it seems to be behaving properly. I need to add a bunch of logging now (it was there in the VB version but I wasn't sure what approach I wanted to take in the C# version) and run about a season's worth of games before it's truly ready to go. Adding logging will probably take a couple days, and testing a couple more. Look for another update next weekend or so.

The current odd issue is construction at the stadium is interfering with games. Both teams are using the home bench and locker room (doing line changes at the top of the field as you watch it on the playback) and as a result seem to think they're all on the same team. There's no hitting going on. Zero. None. Obviously this must be straightened out and fast. We don't want the orcs to think they're supposed to get along or anything!

The logging I mentioned in my last update is all in place and working fine. I found a couple (still minor) issues here and there and the simulation's humming along nicely, with the exception of the above. So far so good still. :-D

The away team's lockers have been reopened and the bench problem is (mostly) solved. However, some trickster installed a random portal on the away team's bench so that occasionally an away team orc will go to the bench and find themselves teleported over to the home bench. Of course they immediately run from there and head straight across the field to their own bench again.

Also, the problem with hitting has been fixed. However, I suspect the trickster that installed the portal is some sort of necromancer, because now when an orc dies on the field, they keep running to the bench!

Finally, some orcs try to take their ball and go home. They catch the ball or win the faceoff, run to the side of the field by their bench and refuse to pass, run or shoot. After a while the referee calls for a faceoff, but they're still pouting. The faceoff goes and they just stand there refusing to do anything. If they somehow get the ball, they hold it until the ref loses patience with them again.

/sigh

Still working on it...

The teleporter has been disabled.

Also, an expert psychologorc has talked to the players and helped them through their problem of not participating. Hopefully we have seen the last of orcs just standing still after the faceoff.

Finally, I think I've tracked down the necromancer. Now the dead orcs should act like dead orcs. No, I won't add zombie orcs to the game. Probably.

The last nagging problem has been fixed and the playbacks I've watched have looked pretty good. The problem I just fixed was during the faceoff where two orcs have the same position. One is already in position and the other is still moving into his position. The one that's ready is closer to the other orc's position on the field, so they switch places to let the other orc get into faceoff position faster.

The big test, of course, will be letting everyone else see the playback and game results and complain about them. Constructively, of course.

Of course the last problem isn't really the last problem. There were others. For example, the orcs left the field after the end of the second period! I guess they're a little out of shape from their down time. That's fixed now, along with a couple other minor issues.

The last round of testing went pretty well. Even though the auction is not translated, I am going to restart the server processes this week. I will push out the first (non-test) games by a week so everyone has a chance to log in.

The server is back on. I need to do a little adjustment to the schedule and we're off!

The schedule is adjusted. I have several games being played between now and next week, all with autopilot teams. Let's see how it goes! (Cross fingers for me.)

The game schedule is re-adjusted. There were some leagues that had more games to go than game days scheduled. This has been fixed.

I re-ran the mass email this morning (and I do apologize to anyone who may have received it twice). There were a lot of bounces that I have removed from future mailings, but it seems like the actual updated mailer works correctly now. I wasn't aware that my ISP put a 250 emails per hour limit on me until I tried to send more than that (a lot more!).
